The Past

OBX Boatworks is far more than a boat builder. They represent the continuation of North Carolina’s precious boat building heritage with the help of the state’s furniture craftsman and wholesome amount of technology to make it even better. When you see it you’ll know it by the way it rides proudly on the water with a certain grace and nostalgic look.

The Present

OBX designs and crafts boats drawing on the experience of a noted naval architect, design engineers, and master craftsmen. Our boats are crafted using a proprietary platform no other company has. Currently with over 10 boat styles in production, we are forging the way for custom sportfishing boats in todays industry.

The Future

We have a goal to be the standard for custom sport-fishing boat craftsmanship in the boating industry. We will create boats unlike ever seen before with exceptional performance that is sure to provide the perfect boating experience for OBX owners.

Custom With the Finest Details

OBX Boatworks and owner/designer Brad Flater has combined the classic design of a true Carolina flare hull design with today’s modern boat building technology and added unsurpassed craftsmanship of North Carolina furniture artisans.

Instead of forcing a prospective owner to settle for a one-size-fits-all option, Flater draws on his expertise as a Naval Architect to customize each boat in a way that realizes the vision of its owner.

Advanced materials, including proprietary resins and nanotechnology, provide OBX design engineers with a platform that no other boat builder on the planet has to design components.

Fabrication methods range from using state-of-the-art techniques and tools to leveraging the hand and experience of master craftsmen to realize every detail.

The OBX Boatworks Factory

OBX Boatworks had big goals for the original Hatteras Yachts plant in High Point, N.C., where the company began producing boats in 2012. Owner Brad Flater, who was a former Hatteras employee in product development decided to tap into the customized luxury yacht market and is utilizing his employees’ furniture craftsmanship skills to give him an edge.

Since production in 2012, Brad has produced a fleet of custom sport-fishing yachts that have satisfied customers throughout the USA.

In 2021 OBX moved the production facility to Thomasville NC on a 155 Acre property allowing us the ability to expand our brands and production. OBX Boatworks has partnered with Jaguar Powerboats and Aquantico LLC to develop the Brickyard into a true Mid Atlantic Boat Building destination.

the 135,000-square-foot factory allows for large designs, efficient builds, and more room for overall design and storage of quality resins, and boat parts.

Flater’s expertise as a Naval Architect brings new processes to the great Billy Dupree Carolina design with the use of infused hulls which are not only stronger, but environmentally friendly. The best thing that Brad brings to the boat building table is his passion and love and respect for quality. Quality of the past and present. He respects the traditions and designs of those boat builders before him and rather than trying to create a new hull design, he’s taken a classic and added beauty and technology.
